The Legend of The Seven Sleepers
The story centers on a group of seven young men that were living in the Roman Empire in the 3rd century BC. According to the legend, this group of men refused to proclaim faith in the Roman Gods. In turn, fearful of persecution and death for their Christian beliefs they fled to a cave just outside the ancient city of Ephesus to protect themselves. With these young men seeking help from God, divine intervention took place in this cave.
The seven young men ended up sleeping deeply for a couple of hundred years in the cave. An enormous miraculous rock blocked the entrance to the cave, protecting the seven men for quite some time. As the entrance to the cave was unsealed, the deep sleep ended.
It wasn’t until approximately 250 years later that the Seven Sleepers’ tale was revealed. The young men’s sleeping cave was accidentally found in the 5th Century CE while construction was underway during the reign of the Christian Byzantine emperor Theodosius II. The seven young men thought that they had only been sleeping for a couple of hours when the reality was different.
However, once they woke up from their deep sleep, they realized that there were many changes that occurred. Christianity had spread throughout the Roman Empire that was once Pagan, and Ephesus had become a center for Christendom. They realized that their faith did not put their lives in jeopardy anymore.
The city was soon filled with stories of their miraculous awakening, and the Seven Sleepers were soon held in high regard as representations of faith and divine protection. They told the astonished people of Ephesus about their amazing tale, demonstrating the strength of God and the tenacity of faith in the midst of challenges.
